Reflection on a Journey, 2012
Digital prints on printed paper placemats
The series Reflection on a Journey was inspired by The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō by the 19th-century Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, part of which is on display nearby. In his work Hiroshige depicted the stations scattered along Japan’s eastern coast road, which was used mainly by pilgrims traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto. Davish Ben Moshe has taken readymade placemats decorated with the Hiroshige prints and superimposed upon them photographs of her own journey from her home on Mount Gilo, on the outskirts of Jerusalem, to the Old City.
In this way, she has brought together two sites of pilgrimage – 19th-century Kyoto and 21st-century Jerusalem. This blending of landscapes and routes has a deliberately artificial appearance. In her prints, the Japanese images embody the fantasy of the longed-for destination, but the photographs of Jerusalem, taken on both sides of the separation wall, produce the opposite effect: despite the city’s multiple traditions of sanctity, they add a temporal dimension to the prints and dispel their air of holiness.

הבסיס לסדרת העבודות פגישה בנסיעה מדומה הוא סדרת ההדפסים 53 התחנות בדרך הטוֹקַאיְדוֹ של האמן היפני בן המאה ה-19 אוּטָגָוָוה הִירוֹשִׁיגֶה. הירושיגה תיאר בעבודתו את התחנות הפזורות לאורך דרך הים המזרחית ביפן, ששימשה בעיקר עולי רגל במסעם מטוקיו לקִיוֹטוֹ. דביש בן משה נטלה מצעיות נייר שעליהן מודפסים הדימויים היפניים והדפיסה מעליהם צילומים ממסעה שלה שערכה מביתה בהר גילה לעיר העתיקה בירושלים.
האמנית מפגישה בין שני מוקדים של עלייה לרגל – קיוטו של המאה ה-19 וירושלים של המאה ה-21 – וההתלכדות של נופיהם ודרכיהם נראית מלאכותית: בהדפסים החדשים מגלמים הדימויים של יפן את הפנטזיה, את המקום שמשתוקקים אליו, ולמרות מסורות הקדושה הרבות שנקשרות לירושלים, דווקא הדימויים שלה, שצולמו משני צִדיה של גדר ההפרדה, הופכים את ההדפסים לארציים ונוטלים מהם את הילת קדושה.
